Founded in 1749, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is one of the oldest Jewish congregations in the United States and a sgnificant Revolutionary-era institutions. During the American Revolution, members of the congregation were among Charleston's most active patriots, contributing to the defense of the city and the cause of independence at a moment when the promise of religious liberty made the Revolution's ideals deeply personal.
Visitors can explore this history through two tour offerings available by appointment: the historic synagogue on Hasell Street, and the Coming Street Cemetery one of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in the American South, where many of Charleston's earliest Jewish residents, including Revolutionary-era congregants, are interred. Together, the two sites offer an intimate window into the life, faith, and civic contributions of a founding community whose story is woven into the fabric of Charleston's Revolutionary history.
